Youth Crime Review
Overview
In this brief report, the Impact Initiative delves into the effectiveness of key youth justice interventions like Functional Family Therapy (FFT) and Multisystemic Therapy (MST). This briefing paper, based on an extensive review of over 700 publications, synthesises global best practices in reducing youth crime and improving family dynamics. By examining the evidence from these programs, as well as emerging approaches like strengths-based mentoring, trauma-informed care, and diversionary activities, this report provides actionable insights for policymakers and service providers in Australia.
The paper highlights the need for strategic investment in evidence-based interventions, contrasting these with less effective methods like boot camps and school exclusion programs. It also identifies systemic barriers to effective implementation, such as funding constraints and the need for interagency collaboration. The ultimate goal is to inform policy decisions, aligning with ongoing legislative discussions in youth justice reform. With a focus on rehabilitation over punitive measures, this report advocates for a humane and data-driven approach to reducing youth crime.
